Elisabeth Ribeiro’s journey from Brazil to Australia at the age of 20 is one of resilience, ambition, and a desire to create something truly special for the people around her. Arriving in a new country with little knowledge of the English language, Elisabeth poured her time into her children for thirteen years before discovering her destiny as a business owner. Fast forward to today, she is the proud owner of Deja-Vu, a delightful gift shop café in Mackay that offers so much more than just a place to enjoy tea and coffee.
Deja-Vu is like stepping into another world. With its authentic mix of antiques, gifts, and charming furniture, the shop radiates a homely, welcoming vibe that creates opportunities for people to connect.
“I wanted to give people a nice place, to come sit and have a drink, whether it’s coffee, tea, or to just spend some time relaxing,” says Elisabeth.
“Once you’re here, you feel like you’re in another country.”
And she’s certainly succeeded in creating that atmosphere. In fact, much of her success can be attributed to the support she’s received from the previous owner, Kerri Ross, who ran the business for 21 years.
“She’s been lovely, and I can’t thank her enough for all the help she’s offered to me,” Elisabeth says.
Beyond regular café offerings, Elisabeth has a passion for bringing people together. That’s why she hosts beautiful high teas, which she believes are perfect for celebrating life’s special moments. Whether it's a baby shower, birthday party, or just a moment of indulgence, high tea at Deja-Vu is a celebration of life and community.
“People are always celebrating something, and I love that,” she shares.
Outside of Deja-Vu, Elisabeth is a master of multitasking. She manages her own Airbnb’s while continuing to support her husband's landscaping business – a venture she’s been involved in for over two decades.
Her passion for music runs deep and shines through her children, who excel in drums, piano, and orchestral performances. The Ribeiro family also enjoys camping and exploring new restaurants, fuelling Elisabeth’s love for food and culture.
Elisabeth’s story is one of purpose, joy, and the belief that you can achieve anything with hard work and faith.
“You can do anything…God will give you the strength to do it,” she says, and her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that anything is possible when you follow your passion and stay true to your values.
Whether you're popping in for a coffee, indulging in high tea with friends, or searching for a unique gift, Deja-Vu serves up more than just a cup of nostalgia. It’s a place where every sip feels familiar, yet delightfully new!
