Evolution Engineering is a powerhouse in the Mackay engineering sector, merging high-tech waterjet profiling with a strong, family-centred philosophy.
This family-run business began almost twenty years ago in a small shed, powered by Managing Director John Refalo and his son Justin. Together with Justin’s wife, Melissa, and Director Joe Grech, they’ve nurtured Evolution Engineering into a premier workshop for quality engineering solutions, with an impressive line-up of state-of-the-art equipment, including three advanced waterjet profiling machines.
Today, Evolution Engineering not only champions precision and quality but also embodies a community-driven character that reflects their dedication to supporting local industries and families alike.
The path to success began when John brought his extensive experience from Hay Point, joined by Justin’s enthusiasm as the company’s very first official employee. Their small operation initially handled basic fabrication tasks, but their curiosity led them to explore the innovative possibilities of waterjet cutting. What began with a single machine grew into one of the most comprehensive waterjet profiling workshops in Australia, boasting capabilities that set Evolution Engineering apart in both skill and service.
“Our waterjet machines are a game-changer,” says Managing Director John.
“We can cut virtually all types of speciality metals including QT plate, wear plate, all alloys, brass and bronze, as well as other materials such as wood, plastic, rubber and even some softer stones”
Waterjet profiling’s cold-cutting technique allows the team to eliminate heat-affected zones in the material which doesn’t compromise the structural integrity of the material properise. This makes waterjet profiling ideal for sensitive, high-spec components, from complex shapes to fine details.
“With waterjets, we get precision without compromising the integrity of the material,” director Joe explains. Whether it’s a delicate bevelled edge on metal alloy or a sharp corner on porcelain, Evolution Engineering delivers clean, intricate cuts that are both quick and exact.
As Evolution Engineering expanded, so did its capabilities. With each new waterjet, they welcomed more complex projects, evolving into a one-stop shop where clients’ visions come to life under one roof.
“Having everything done in-house allows us to control quality and meet tight deadlines,” Melissa said. Her role as Corporate Services Manager ties every operation together, ensuring projects progress smoothly from start to finish.
The company’s dedication to quality isn’t just in words, but in every part of the process, as jobs are carefully inspected before it leaves the workshop. This extended commitment to eminence has earned them long-standing loyalty from their clients, both big and small.
Beyond the machines and materials, Evolution Engineering’s greatest strength is its people.
“It’s about giving back to the community that supported us from the start,” said John.
“We love our community, so we try to do our part, whether that’s through sponsorships, making trophies for local events, or simply lending a hand where it’s needed.”
This dedication to their region extends beyond the workshop walls, as Evolution Engineering also partners with local schools, offering valuable hands-on experiences for students interested in engineering.
Evolution Engineering’s growth and success haven’t dulled their down-to-earth approach. For them, every job, big or small, is equally significant.
“Every customer is important to us,” says Joe.
“From local farmers to multi-million-dollar enterprises, they all get the same high level of service.”
Their team’s experience across sugar mills, mines, ports and all sorts of industries foundational to Mackay ensures they’re equipped to handle any task, with a specific focus on quality and precision.
As the company approaches its 20th anniversary, Evolution Engineering is committed to continuing their legacy of precision, quality, and community support, ensuring they remain the go-to choice for all your engineering solutions in the region.
