Depth Of View With Robyn Bonner Owner Of R Jean Photography

Photography has been a lifelong passion for Robyn Bonner, one that is fuelled by a love of art and creativity that runs deep in her family. With 16 years of experience in the Whitsundays, Robyn has built a thriving business, R Jean Photography.
“Photography kind of found me. Growing up a country kid, art and creativity were always a part of my life—my grandmother was an artist, and my mum always had a camera in hand.”
Robyn started her career capturing moments aboard the Fantasy ship Ammari. After the ship’s closure, she transitioned into a PA role at a local real estate agency, where she began photographing properties. In 2014, Robyn partnered with another photographer to refine her skills in portrait, family, and wedding photography, and four years later launched her own business.
“I decided to launch R Jean Photography in 2018. In the beginning, I worked part-time, balancing my business while expanding my skills through self-learning. Over time, I built a loyal client base and gradually grew my business.”
Robyn is particularly proud of the ‘Driveway Project,’ which she brought to the Whitsundays during the 2020 lockdown. This initiative, started by Francesca Fuga Photography, aimed to uplift the community during the challenging time.
“It was like creating a family portrait of the Whitsundays, offering a chance for everyone to connect, share moments, and find a little joy during such a tough period.”
Despite the challenges of running a business full-time as a single parent, Robyn has remained committed to her work, juggling long hours and family responsibilities. Her dedication to providing for her family while growing her business demonstrates her resilience.
“It takes an incredible amount of self-belief and determination. Balancing my business, family, and home without support requires constant sacrifice and hard work, but it’s something I’m deeply committed to.”
For Robyn, “As a photographer, creating a positive and professional experience while connecting with clients on a personal level is essential for building trust and creating a comfortable environment. This not only results in beautiful photos but also fosters long-term relationships and repeat business.” She says.
Robyn cherishes every moment spent with her children, as these moments allow her to recharge and return to work with renewed energy.
“I maintain a balance of work and my personal life by carefully managing my schedule around my children’s school and activities, ensuring I can be present for them. Family getaways, particularly camping trips, allow us to disconnect from the daily hustle and reconnect with nature.”
“Trust in your abilities and pursue your passion with confidence,” says Robyn, reflecting on her business journey. “Starting your own business takes hard work, but it’s important to stay true to your vision and not be afraid to adapt along the way.”
What's your afternoon pick-me-up?
“An afternoon walk along the beach or boardwalk. That or a power nap!”
Favourite place you've visited and why?
“The Bungle Bungles in the Purnululu National Park WA. Camping under the stars and exploring the beauty of the area was something unforgettable.”
